Francesca Wexler: Amphetamine Man
GENRES: Alt-Rap, East Coast Hip-Hop
The bassline is reminiscent of A Tribe Called Quest and the late 80s New York style of alt-rap. Francesca Wexler’s song “AMPHETAMINE MAN” used the beat to help underscore the sexy lesbian imagery within the lyrics. Within the hip-hop genre, lesbianism is rarely talked about in general but when it is, it is usually by a straight man sexualizing queer love and intimacy.

Wexler carries herself with a relaxing, low voice with direct intention. My favorite lyric from the song is in verse 1, “She call me Molly cause I lock her jaw / Just ask about the last withdrawal.” If you have ever experienced wlw, queer intimacy, this lyric might hit home with you. Whether it is your first lesbian experience or the 50th, you’ll come across a lesbian who gives you this feeling. Heart thumping, hands tingling and numb, and your mind wandering, looking for that “high” again. Within the chorus, you will hear a call and
response, “You like that? I like that.” Call and response, or antiphony, is typically used in gospel, blues, jazz, folk, and reggae but can also be found in popular music.
